"If our knowledge is sparse, the Fobbles know nothing of these countries."
―Lord Abalan[src]

The Unknown Countries, also referred to as Unknown Territory, is a region of the Earth located in the northeast beyond Greenland. Largely unexplored throughout history, it remained a mystery to travelers and served as a source of tales and wonders. Despite its enigmatic nature, it is home to several iconic places such as Quackville, Tsala, Tsalla, and Myrk are all located in the Unknown Territory.

To those who lived in the Unknown Countries, it was known as the Mainland. They knew the rest of the planet as "Lesser Land". A number of aircraft are said to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances, often attributed to paranormal or extraterrestrial activity.

Description[]

"The whole of Tsalla was like a single living thing, a breeding ground for dwindling forms of villainy."
―WINDOW[src]

Tsalla had a diversity of bizarre plants (such as spike, spore, and enormous pitcher plants), fungi, and animals which were almost rubber-like and translucent. When the sun shone, the environment glittered like multicolored glass. Most of Tsalla was entirely covered by a humid, fetid landscape of huge fungal forests, and its wildlife included native gellas, immigrated tarantulas, and a prodigious gargoyle. Tsalla had strong ties to the Life, and as such the country's flora and fauna, including Jungle Tsallians, could be influenced by a presence of a strong mutant, both light and dark. Most plants and animals of Tsalla had adapted special defenses to protect them from each other, which made them particularly hostile to outsiders. Tsalla was known to radiate a sort of life force that the native Jungle Tsallians were capable of feeling.

History[]

Early history[]

"If you keep trying to map the Unknown Countries, pretty soon you'll have to rename them."
―L'smae[src]

The reach of civilization extended at least nominally to the edge of the globe, to the areas above Canada. Twenty percent of the Earth's mass was said to be in the Unknown Countries. Some believed it was a paranormal site in which the laws of physics were violated or altered. Many governments repeatedly sent scouts into the Unknown Countries. L'smae once remarked that if people kept trying to map the Unknown Countries, they'd need to be renamed.[1]

The Legions of Metta somehow discovered the Unknown Countries, since they built a stronghold there called Daret.[2]

Following the signing of the International Consonance which ended the War on Metta and dissolved the Legions, the remnants retreated from the known world and relocated to the Unknown Countries. Together, they established a militaristic remnant faction that became known as the Central Remnant and joined the NoHeads.[3]

Imperial Period[]

"This country is evil. It corrupted me! But you... you can save me. Just let me get away from here..."
Mara Bode[src]

Native plant, fungal, and animal life evolved to dominate the environment of Tsalla in a deep symbiotic relationship, causing significant energies to permeate the ecosystem. Unfortunately, years of damage to the ecosystem combined with the pain and suffering felt in the country caused many of the mutated Jungle Tsallians to teeter dangerously close to the Darkness. This made Tsalla an even more dangerous place, in many years to come. Sometime before the Dartus Outbreak, Verpus the Foul conquered the country, beginning to occupy it. The Dartus arrived and maintained presence primarily to research biological agents takes from diverse and abundant plant life.[4] However, the Rodent Clan continued to offer freedom for the locals against Verpus.[citation needed]

During the late days of the Imperial Period, Mae sent her liege Vyrtel to Tsalla to deal with mutants there. Master Rachel Bradley had exiled herself to this country, where she was training the grief-stricken apprentice, Mara Bode, and Jungle Tsallians for a confrontation with the Mistress of the Knights of Mae. Vyrtel fought his way through a small army of Jungle Tsallian warriors and engaged Rachel Bradley in a sword duel. Despite Master Bradley summoning more Jungle Tsallians and even calling on the assistance of a gargoyle, Vyrtel defeated her in combat, and after informing Vyrtel about how he could be "so much more" if he turned to the light, she then purposely fell into the pit and conceded her defeat. Vyrtel attempted to save her as she began her plummet, but her body exploded in green light as she died, causing him to turn back and shield his eyes, this had further plundered Tsalla to the Darkness. Not realizing that Bradley was dead, Sheriff Bladepoint came to convince the officer to join his rebellion. Bode, who had been driven insane by the darkness, kidnapped the Sheriff to use to bargain with Xod, being unaware he was dead. However, three years later, a reformed L'smae and Ratchet redeemed themselves by rescuing the Sheriff. After dueling Mara, he allowed her to live, something that Bladepoint condemned, likening her to Xod. Verpus began operations in the country to eliminate the native mutants and established a prison facility.[4]

Ascension of the International Alliance[]

During the height of the International Alliance, Queen Zygen ruled over the Unknown Countries from within Jupiter. After she was killed, Zira Miranda Grover, Zygen's political ally, ruled over the Unknown Countries while continuing to keep their existence secret.[4][5]

When Smith's was burned, Superquack visited Davis at the Quackville Hospital, and when he exited again, a large number of reporters was waiting for him to give his reaction to the attack. At first, Superquack wanted to leave without speaking, but then he publicly threatened the Iron Godking, leaving aside politics and the Octon Corps, as he simply wanted revenge. Superquack challenged him to come and duel him at the Plasma Bay.[6]

Determined to prevent C-5 and the Outriders from destroying Quackville, Exogale rallied her friends to prepare for battle. Despite their best efforts, the warriors were defeated, although they managed to dislodge the Power Matrix in the scuffle, which lay cold and prone on the street. By the time Superquack arrived with Morgan and Janet, they found the decimated city being consumed by C-5's destructive will. The invasion was, according to Mr. Baby Tutu's plan, the first battle in his war to subjugate the Solar System, but the actions of the Supers hoped to neutralize the threat of C-5 and the wild beasts before they could continue the invasion. The quartet rallied in defense of Quackville, but quickly concluded they would be overwhelmed as wave after wave of Outriders and wild beasts converged. The superheroes kept their ground to hold off the invasion and evacuated civilians while Superquack successfully located the Power Matrix while a puzzled Outrider was examining it. C-5 set upon him while the Outriders rushed to defend what they falsely believed was their life-force. Assisted by Exogale, he jammed it into C-5's mouth and it came out through his anus. The Power Matrix hit the ground and exploded. A moment later, C-5 fell mundanely into the river, alive but completely immobilized. Although much of their power was diminished, the Outriders had been freed of John's malevolent will, and they profoundly thanked the superheroes for liberating them before they disappeared into the South.[6]

"C-5 sure did a lot of damage, didn't he?"
"He sure did. I'd say billions of dollars of damage.
"
―Steven and Tanesha Thompson[src]

While the war had ended in Quackville's favor, the consequences were numerous. News channels following the war confirmed the legitimacy of the extraterrestrial attack and some regarded the new heroes with praise and thanks while others had far less charitable opinions.[6] During the disaster many people were buried under the collapsed buildings. A boy named Gree Rorley thought he had lost his mother during the conflict, but later found out that she had survived. In order to commemorate all of those fallen in the tragic event, Heroes Park was established on the epicenter of what was left after C-5's attack, with a massive silvery statue of Superquack and Morgan being built as well, in honor of the extraordinary heroics that they displayed while helping save Quackville from the invading Outriders.[7]

The extensive repairs cost Quackville $180 billion, and various pieces of Outrider technology and paraphernalia were picked up by ordinary people and found their way into the black market.[8] Ethan Jack, the owner and founder of the company Jack Dynamics, decided to expand his business by establishing a branch of Jack Dynamics in Quackville during the rebuilding of the city following Mr. Baby Tutu's defeat.[9] All four of the main perpetrators went their separate ways after the battle, and the Metro Board did them the courtesy of not allowing anyone to track their whereabouts into the Unknown Countries, feeling that they had contributed much to the human race during the war. Having adopted Mr. Tutusymbol, Morgan married Superquack and proceeded to leave Quackville for the next four years in order to undertake an unorthodox Grand Tour, bringing numerous superheroes back from the dead.[6] TIME published an article regarding the Quackville disaster. A copy of this issue was bought by Jaxon.[9]

Fall of the NoHeads[]

"Everything is rough in the Unknown Countries."
―Summer Petersen[src]

Throughout the Second NoHead War, the NoHeads maintained a presence in the city of Tsalla. However, Tsalla became heavily trafficked by dwindling crime syndicates like the Rodent Clan. The U.S. Government later wrested control of the country away from the clan.[citation needed] After several NoHeads fled from civilized society into the Unknown Countries, they briefly passed here, though they did not stay for very long because they did not want to contend with Superquack.[10]

Over the next four decades following the Time Army Offensive, Superquack played a crucial role in leading Quackville to rise from a suburban town to a global city, which was renamed New Quackville. New Quackville gradually evolved into a beautiful cultural, financial, high-tech, entertainment, and media center. As of 2072, the city was still owned and overseen by the Unified Collective. However, Superquack did sit on the board and was integral in planning the city's operations.[11]

Returning to New Quackville, the team walked outside and played some music where they danced and cheered.[11]

Politics[]

The differing political factions of the Unknown Countries are mysterious, although they are known to include the Metro Board, amongst other various smaller nations in ranging size and power.

Known locations[]

  • Myrk
  • Quackville
  • Tsala
  • Tsalla - A largely unsettled terrestrial jungle city. Located near the city of Quackville, the city was hot and humid and it featured significant water resources beneath a surface radiated by ultraviolet light of the Sun. Native plant, fungal, and animal life evolved to dominate the environment in a deep symbiotic relationship, causing significant energies to permeate the ecosystem. Years of violence traumatized the native ecosystem, pushing its natural energies and mutant inhabitants towards the Darkness. During the Imperial Period, law enforcement officer Rachel Bradley and her apprentice Mara Bode went into hiding in the Tsalla jungles, working to bring the shamanistic Tsallian tribes away from the Darkness. Master Bradley was killed by an assassin in 2014, throwing the surviving Tsallian shaman and Mara Bode deep into the grip of the Darkness. The natural power of the natives eventually caught the attention of Verpus the Foul, who prepared to exterminate the tribes in order to preempt any threat his power posed. Bode led hordes of dark-sided Tsallians against Dartus invaders,[1] but was herself killed during the fight.[citation needed] Although the NoHeads later maintained a presence on the planet through the Second NoHead War, Tsalla became heavily trafficked by dwindling crime syndicates like the Rodent Clan, although the U.S. Government wrested control of the country away from the clan.[citation needed]
  • Tutu Land

Behind the scenes[]

Tsalla was created for Before The SMSB: The Dominion of the Dark Lord and would later re-appear in Before The SMSB: The Legacy of Mae. Early concept art for the country depicted an entire world of enormous bulbous plants that seeped antigravitic goo into the skies, which concurrently evolved to become Planet X in Convergence.
